Tsavorite (Tsavolite) is a rich deep green stone and a rare member of the Garnet family. Its mystical forest green colour, that can rival the beauty of Emeralds, has made it famous within a few years of its discovery in the 20th century. Tsavorite is a highly popular jewellery stone due to its aesthetic charm and fire-like sparkle which is comparable to that of a Diamond.
The quality and value of any stone is evaluated on certain parameters.
Origin -
Tsavorite is a relatively new gemstone and was discovered in 1967. It was given its name after the location where it was found – Tsavo National Park which is located in the border strips dividing Kenya and Tanzania. Zimbabwe and Madagascar also mine this gem but the quantity and quality is comparatively lesser.
Color -
Tsavorite Garnet is found in every shade of green ranging from bright yellowish green to deep green to bluish green. It is important to consider saturation while considering colour as under-saturation results in pale stones and over-saturation makes the stones dark and murky. The most desired are the vivid green stones with perfect saturation and even color distribution.
Clarity -
Tsavorite is transparent stone with a high refractive index which gives it a good level of brilliance and a vitreous lustre. It is typically a less included stone when compared with other gemstones; thus eye-clean stones are preferred.
Cut -
Tsavorite can be cut into all the popular gemstone shapes but ovals and cushions are considered the best. Since Tsavorite has a high refractive index, faceting it creates a better play with light and optimizes its brilliance.
Frequently Asked Questions About Tsavorite
Tsavorite Garnet is the birthstone for which month?
Tsavorite Garnet is the modern birthstone for the month of January.
Which country produces the best Tsavorite Garnet?
Tsavorite is extremely rare and was discovered only recently in 1967. Kenya, Tanzania, Zimbabwe and Madagascar are countries where this stone is mined. Tsavo National Park located on the borders of Kenya and Tanzania is the major source of the stone. The best quality stones are also produced here.
Who can wear Tsavorite Garnet?
Tsavorite Garnet is treasured for its remarkable appearance, high durability and immense rarity. It is not an astrological stone, so it can be worn without the recommendation of an astrologer. There are no restrictions or limitations in wearing it.

Colored gemstones are becoming more popular every year as an engagement center stone choice. Tsavorite is a unique and vibrant choice for an engagement ring. Its striking color stands out beautifully on the finger and really makes a statement. Additionally, Tsavorite has a great sparkle and fire which makes it a perfect pair with Diamonds.
What is the difference between Tsavorite and Emeralds?
Tsavorite and Emeralds are both vivid green gemstones. Emeralds (Panna) is a well known and popular stone as it is one of the Navratnas. Tsavorite on the other hand is a collectors stone and not an astrological stone. Even though Tsavorite is much rarer than Emerald, Emeralds tend to be more expensive than Tsavorites. This is due to the fact that Emerald is one of the four precious coloured gemstones and has been of huge value since ancient times. Tsavorites have a higher refractive index than Emeralds and therefore higher brilliance and sparkle. Emeralds are known for their characteristic hue but not for their fire or brilliance. Although both stones have the same Mohs ranking and therefore the same scratch resistance, Tsavorite is a much tougher stone than Emerald. This is due to the fact that Emeralds are often heavily included making them more prone to chipping.
What is the difference between Tsavorite and Demantoid Garnets?
Tsavorite and Demantoid are both green variety stones from the family of Garnets. Though the green colors of Tsavorite and Demantoid overlap, they are different at the species level. Tsavorite is a grossularite garnet and Demantoid is an andradite garnet. Both stones have inclusions but every Demantoid Garnet has a trace of a unique type of inclusion called horsetails. These wisp-like inclusions start at an apex and expand outward resembling a horse's tail in the wind or an exploded firework. Both the stones have a high refractive index but Demantoid Garnets have a dispersion level higher than a Diamond. It displays a fire through flashes of multicoloured light. Additionally, even though both stones are extremely rare and a collectors item; Demantoid Garnet is even rarer than Tsavorite which makes Tsavorite a more known stone.
